The First Presbyterian Church of Algona, Iowa is one half of the “Yoked” relationship between the Algona and Irvington Presbyterian Churches.  The Algona church is involved in community activities as well as activities within the church itself.  On Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings, you will see the young people involved with Kid’s Club and Sunday School.  You will also get to hear them sing some Sunday mornings for special music during worship.  Learning about God’s word is not only for the young here, as there is adult Bible study  on Tuesday evenings.  The Algona Presbyterian church also has an adult choir which shares their talents throughout the year whether it be the entire choir, a soloist, duet or small group.

Our portion of Christ’s Church was organized on September 24, 1857. While there is some historical debate, most consider our church to be the first established in Algona. It is said that the first Pastor, Rev. D.S. McComb, couldn’t sing a note, but his enthusiastic congregation made up for it. In 1862, a nearby Sioux uprising caused an attendance reduction as members temporarily fled, but the church resumed growth in 1868. Unfortunately, starting in 1873 and continuing to 1895, the church again fell on hard times and little record can be found of church worship or activity in that period. In 1895, the Holy Spirit revived the church, starting with only 20 members, and by 1897 the original building (where the Algona Post Office currently stands) had been built. The church grew with the fortunes of Algona and a building remodeling was completed in 1937. As our church began its second century in 1957, the congregation approved a plan to construct a new building at the corner of Main and State Streets, where it continues today. This building was dedicated in 1961. On June 28, 1979, tragedy struck when a tornado ripped through this section of Algona. Our building was damaged, but through the dedication of the congregation, it continued in use as our worship center beginning with the following Sunday and continuing throughout the reconstruction period. Our building has continued to provide space for us to gather for worship and fellowship. In 2014, the Narthex was expanded to allow for more fellowship area and the covered drive was constructed. Join us in our prayer that this building may continue to allow for worship of the Triune God for many years to come! May God bless your travels in this life as God has blessed this  congregation.
