Irvington Session, First Presbyterian Church, Irvington, Iowa

     The Session members of Irvington First Presbyterian Church, Irvington, Iowa, met on July 21, 2016, at 7:00 pm. 

     Present were: Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Virginia Witham, Kevin Benson, Pastor Walter Reemtsma, Red Frankl, and Faye Kuhlmann, and Margaret Curren. Marlene Eastman was a visitor. Absent: Kevin Walker and Carole Gridley.

     Pastor Loren Shellabarger opened with prayer and the devotion was sharing his experience with us of what it was like for him to observe at a sports competition held this week for special needs kids and their parents. “For me always an encouraging and uplifting experience.”

     The agenda was passed around, a couple points were added for discussion.

     Kevin Benson presented the financial reports. A gift was received from Nationwide and Kirt Walker. 

     The shed is basically done with a couple small details to be seen to. 

     Life & Hope is closing in Fort Dodge. 

     The Liaison Committee will meet for Pastor Walter Reemtsma’s review later this fall. Pastor Walt’s commission was approved unanimously for the next year.

     Dedication Sunday was discussed and is planned for August 21st during Sunday worship and two children, Logan and Mika, will receive their Bibles from the church.

     Fall is coming fast, we discussed having an end-of-summer picnic. Marvel Culbertson volunteered to host the all-parish potluck picnic on her farm near Lone Rock. We had a short discussion and are excited to start planning for the picnic and having lots of fun on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at 12:00 noon.

     The Session approved the wedding of Linda Harms and Kevin Hensley to be performed during Sunday service on a date soon to be announced.

     Pastor Loren Shellabarger and Kevin are working on repairing the kitchen and bathroom doors.

     We discussed the grass area between the sidewalk and the church and think that we will transplant hostas there from Marlene Eastman’s home in the Spring. We also discussed adding insulation panels around the foundation of the church. It was suggested that Kevin could check on cost. It was noted that front parking is in need of crushed rock and we asked Red Frankl if he could look into that. 

     T-shirts can still be ordered. The Algona First Presbyterian Church is planning special Olympics games on August 7, 2016, with 2:30 pm for registration and 3:00 pm for the games to begin. All are welcome. There will be a picnic following.

     We discussed the problems with the vacuum and a motion was made for Kevin Benson to look at I-Bots and to check the cost.

     Carole Gridley and Bobby Erickson’s work was greatly appreciated on the Mission Trip to St. Paul, MN, to help clean a church Sanctuary.  

     Pastor Loren Shellabarger will be on leave August 22 – 28, 2016.

      The Session members of the Irvington First Presbyterian Church, Irvington, Iowa, met on May 19, 2016, at 7:00 pm to do business and to interview our two confirmands, Hannah Frankl and Rebecca (Becca) Mallia, to become full members of the Irvington Church. 

     Present were: Virginia Witham, Kevin Benson, Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Pastor Walter Reemtsma, Red Frankl, Kevin Walker, Carole Gridley and Faye Kuhlmann, and Margaret Curren.  Visitors were: Tammie Illg, Hannah Marie Frankl, and Rebecca Danielle Mallia.

     Pastor Loren Shellabarger opened with prayer and Pastor Walter Reemtsma read from Philippians 4:4–7.

     Agenda was passed out, modified and approved unanimously.

     Kevin Benson presented the financial reports and also reported that a potential gift is in the works through a sharing/matching gift. Pastor Loren Shellabarger presented his pastor’s report.  Pastor Walter Reemtsma provided an associate pastor’s report.

     Vacation Bible School is planned for May 28, 2016, at Call State Park near Algona. 

     The storage shed progresses. Electrical is in and doors will be installed.

     Dedication Sunday will be July 17, 2016, as part of the Service; celebration after.

     Motion was made and approved for Kevin Benson to purchase supplies from Menards and fix church doors.

     Pastor Walter Reemtsma requested to change his salary to a housing allowance effective June 1, 2016.  Motion was made by Virginia and seconded by Kevin.  Motion approved.

     Pastor Loren Shellabarger requested a change in the wording of his work week. We discussed and motion was made and approved.

     We discussed visions to energize the youth group with new opportunities and grow the group.  A leadership team will be drawn from all three churches.

     A mission trip is planned to Omaha, Nebraska – ABIDE for July 7 – 10, 2016.  Cost is $25.

     Pastor Walter Reemtsma gave his report.

     Minutes were read and approved.

     Bibles for Logan and Mikah will be presented on Dedication Sunday.

     Local Pentecost Offering will be given to the Algona Library for a youth program.

     Becca Mallia and Hannah Frankl read their Statements of Faith and answered several questions. Virginia Witham made a motion they should be welcomed into full membership and Faye Kuhlmann seconded. Motion passed unanimously.  Pastor Loren Shellabarger’s charge, “They are the church, not the future but now.”

     The members of the Session Irvington First Presbyterian Church, Irvington, Iowa, met on March 17, 2016, at 7:00 pm. 

     Present were:  Virginia Witham, Kevin Benson, Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Pastor Walter Reemtsma, Red Frankl, Kevin Walker, and Margaret Curren. Absent were: Carole Gridley and Faye Kuhlmann.

     Pastor Loren Shellabarger opened with prayer and read from Psalms 118:19 and lead discussion.

     Kevin Benson presented the financial reports.  Pastor Loren presented his pastor’s report.  Pastor Walter Reemtsma provided an associate pastor’s report.

     Vacation Bible School is planned for May 28, 2016, at Call State Park near Algona. 

     The storage shed will be built on-site. Side walk is in place. Construction is ongoing. Daniel Frankl donated siding and roofing materials.

     Concern was voiced about 3 church doors and arrangements are being made to get them repaired.

     Irvington women served the dinner for Praise Worship in January and April, 2016. Praise Worship on Wednesday nights will be on break for the summer.

     Confirmands will meet with Session members on May 19, 2016; confirmation will be held during Sunday service on June 5, 2016, with a luncheon at noon for all congregational families.

     Pastor told us about Cherish House in Milford, Iowa, and their mission. September 11, 2016, was set as a time for some representatives to come talk to our congregation and distribute baby bottles for coins; and then they will return on October 9, 2016, to collect our change.

     Pastor request a change in his time off. He requests working Monday thru Thursday, take Thursday afternoon off.  Change in days off for 4 weeks; to 3 full weeks and 3 – 3 day week-ends. (We will revisit this at May meeting.)

     60th Anniversary at Lakeshore.

     M & M Grant was received. This grant will go for an air conditioner at camp and is already in the budget.

     On January 21, 2016, at 7:00 pm the members of Irvington Session met at the Irvington First Presbyterian Church, Irvington, Iowa, January 21, 2016, at 7:00 pm.

     Present were: Virginia Witham, Kevin Benson, Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Faye Kuhlmann, Pastor Walter Reemtsma, Red Frankl, Carole Gridley, Margaret Curren. Absent: Kevin Walker.

     Pastor opened with prayer and read from Psalms 20 and led discussion.

     Pastor read the ballot for the upcoming Congregational meeting. Motion was made and approved to approve the agenda and ballot. Communion schedule was discussed and approved for 2016. Pastor Loren’s call was unanimously approved with many praises for Becky and Pastor Loren in the life of our congregation.

     Kevin Benson gave the Financial Report. There is nothing new on the progress of the shed.

     There are 3 doors that need repairing or replacing. And the threshold to the front door needs repaired. The men are working on getting them replaced or repaired.

     Cherish House in Milford, Iowa, asked to come and give a short presentation soon. Motion made and Session members approved that they could make their presentation.

     A Bridal Shower for Chad Benson’s fiancé is scheduled for March 12th at 1:00 pm in the social hall.

     Virginia prepared a duties list and timeline to guide the janitorial staff for cleaning the church; and Rachel Jones, secretary at Algona Church, will prepare a sign-up list for people to volunteer.

     Life and Hope project is on hold at present.

     We took a moment to go over all the projects and missions we planned and were involved in over the past year and talk some about what we looked forward to in 2016. Joanne Hansen was remembered with a prayer by Pastor Loren.

     Pastor Shellabarger will be on vacation the last week of February (22nd thru 28, 2016). We will have a guest pastor. March 6, 2016, is pulpit swap and Pastor Walt will be in Irvington to preach.

     Irvington Women will serve the dinner for Praise Worship on December 9, 2015, and in February at Algona and April, 2016.

     The Congregational Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 17, 2016, noonish with a potluck.

     Our portion of the Peace Offering will be used to stuff the Trailer at the Chrome.

     After discussing the Budget, motion was made to approve it and it passed.

     Life and Hope Church in Fort Dodge was discussed. Pastor Loren and Kevin Benson are preparing a brochure to encourage participation to raise funds to help Life and Hope survive with their 2017 budget.

     M & M Grant was received, a portion of that will go for air conditioner at Lakeshore Center at Okoboji camp and is already in the budget.

     Carol Gridley and Margaret Curren agreed to stay on as Elders for the Class of 2018.

September 17, 2015, 7:00 pm Regular Session Meeting

Present: Kevin Benson, Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Pastor Walter Reemtsma, Faye Kuhlman, Carole Gridley, Red Frankl, Kevin Walker, Virginia Witham. Margaret Curren was absent, Carole took minutes.

     Pastor opened with prayer and read from Matthew 28 and led discussion.

     Kevin presented the financial reports. Walter provided an associate pastor’s report.

     There was a short report on the storage shed. Measurements are made and construction will begin next week.

     A request was made to use the Irvington Church for a Lock-In, November 14 -15, for youth members.

     Irvington Church women are ready to help provide meals for Wednesday night worship, dates are being determined.

     Membership and accounting software options are being investigated.

     Red Frankl will represent the Irvington congregation at Pastor Walter Reemtsma’s Commissioning and Pastor Loren Shellabarger’s Installation on October 4, 2015 at 4:00 pm in the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

     Session agreed to be backup for serving dinners for the Sunday night Strengthening Families course thru October and November.

     We will build a float for the Algona Band Days and pass out candy. Volunteers are needed to help and ride the float.

Special Congregation Meeting Following Sunday Service

To Discuss and Approve the Algona/Irvington/Lone Rock Pastoral Sharing Proposal

Present: A quorum was declared with 29 members present and 4 guests.

Pastor opened with prayer and moderated the meeting. Copies of the Algona/Irvington/Lone Rock Presbyterian Churches Pastoral Sharing Proposal were past to everyone present.

Pastor Loren presented the Pastoral Sharing Proposal for Algona/Irvington/Lone Rock Presbyterian Churches explaining details, stopping for questions and discussion. No questions were asked. Marvel Culbertson made the motion that we go forward with the Pastoral Sharing, support the commission of Pastor Walter Reemtsma, CRE, at the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church, and make the Liaison Committee Algona/Irvington/Lone Rock PSP. Kevin Benson seconded the motion and the motion was approved unanimously.

Special Session Meeting to Discuss Three Upcoming Timely Events

Present: Pastor Walter Reemtsma, Ron Frankl, Carol Gridley, Virginia Witham, Kevin Walker, Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Margaret Curren and Faye Kuhlmann.

Pastor opened with prayer and moderated the meeting. Copies of the Algona/Irvington/Lone Rock Presbyterian Churches Pastoral Sharing Proposal were past to everyone present.

Three items were discussed:

  1. Ministry and Mission Grant – We could apply again this year. After discussion it was approved by unanimous vote to duplicate last year applying for $1,000 to go to camp upkeep.
  2. Annual All Church Potluck Picnic was discussed. It will be August 30 at 1:00 pm at Marvel Culbertson’s home. Meat, table service and beverages will be provided; please bring a lawn chair if you would like.
  3. Pastor Loren presented the Pastoral Sharing Proposal for Algona/Irvington/Lone Rock Presbyterian Churches explaining details, stopping for questions and discussion. Three elders (Ron Frankl, Carol Gridley and Kevin Walker) represented the Irvington congregation on the Liaison Committee and met earlier drafting the PSP to present for approval by the Session and Congregation.
  1. Session members discussed and voted unanimously to support the commission of Pastor Walter Reemtsma, CRE, at the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church as proposed by the Pastoral Sharing Liaison Committee. Only one alteration to Pastor Walter’s functions was made in the proposal, and that was that Pastor Walter would be able to ‘Moderate the Session and the congregation’. Ron Frankl made the motion to go forward with the recommendation of the Liaison Committee to present to the Congregation the PSP and Faye Kuhlman seconded the motion. Ron Frankl, Carole Gridley, and Kevin Walker represented the congregation on the Liaison Committee.
  1. Session members discussed and voted unanimously to make the recommended changes to Pastor Loren Shellabarger’s call. Motion made by Carole Gridley and seconded by Virginia Witham.

A short Congregational Meeting is planned for Sunday, August 23, 2015, following services to seek approval for the proposed Algona/Irvington/Lone Rock Pastoral Sharing Call/Commission.
