REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF THE SESSION

APRIL 18, 2017

     First Presbyterian Church of Algona held a regular meeting of the Session on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in the church kitchen. Pastor Loren Shellabarger, moderator, opened the meeting with prayer at 6:30 pm.

     Present:  Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Angelique Berry, Jason Etherington, Sharon Marty, Betsy Petersen, Pastor Walter Reemtsma, Roger Ricklefs, Justin Ruhnke, Stacy Simpson, and Jan Waltman. Quorum declared.

     Absent:  Jay Beenken, Stacy Simpson (came later).

     Guests were Class of 2017 Confirmands:  Hunter Berry, Matt, Long, Jesse Sassman, and Kyle Simpson.

     Angelique Berry moved to adopt the agenda with additions, seconded by Jason. Ayes 9, Carries.

     Jan Waltman moved to approve the minutes from the regular meeting March 21, 2017, seconded by Angelique Berry. Ayes 9, Carries.

New Business:

  1. Receive confirmands and review their Statements of Faith. Examine confirmands for membership. 

            Jan Waltman moved to approve Jesse Sassman into membership of the church, seconded by Sharon Marty. Ayes 9, Carries.

            Jason Etherington moved to approve Matt Long into membership, seconded by Angelique Berry. Ayes 9, Carries.

            Sharon Marty moved to approve Hunter Berry into membership, seconded by Jan Waltman. Ayes 10, Carries.

            Angelique Berry moved to approve Kyle Simpson into membership, seconded by Sharon Marty. Ayes 10, Carries.

Clerk’s Report:

  1. Holy Communion was served to (93) people at the Algona First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, April 2, 2017. On Monday, April 3, 2017, (15) people were served Communion at the Algona nursing facilities.

Correspondence:

  1. A letter from Rhonda K. Kruse, Mission Engagement Advisor, Presbyterian Mission, regarding Mission Money sent by Algona First Presbyterian Church of supporting Rev. Doug and Elaine Baker, Northern Ireland, and Rev. Jen and Jenny Koball, Peru.
  2. A note from the Committee on Ministry remembering our Pastors, Session, and ministry of our church in prayer.
  3. Thank you from the Prosper Team was received.
  4. AMU regarding communications account confidentiality.
  5. Thank you from the Algona Family YMCA Board of Directors and Staff for the money contribution to the Y.

Action Items:

Building Requests:

  1. Approve building request for kitchen and Fellowship Hall from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm by Lori Schrauth of Algona to host an open house honoring her mother’s (Maxine Cunningham) 85th birthday Saturday, May 13, 2017, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. There would be no cost if rooms were returned to their original condition. Ayes 10, Motion Carries.
  2. Approve building request for entire building from 9:00 am until 3:30 pm by Stephanie Miller, Assistant Kossuth County Attorney, to hold a law enforcement-training seminar for their employees. There will be no cost if rooms are returned to their original condition. Ayes 10, Motion Carries.

Miscellaneous:

  1. Motion made by Angelique Berry to add signage identifying the stained glass window, seconded by Roger Ricklefs. Ayes 10, Motion Carries.

Dates/Events:

  1. Approve Pastor Loren and Pastor Walt’s pulpit swap for Sunday, May 7, 2017. Ayes 10, Motion carries.
  2. Motion was made by Jason Etherington to proceed with “Vision 2020”. Develop Task Force of Session and non-Session members to explore long-range plans. Vision plan for the church is to encompass all areas of the church with direction and focus on how we are driving toward our vision statement. Begin with a broad based survey asking the Congregation what they do or do not want to see happen in the long-range plans. Place a suggestion box in the Narthex to collect comments for our “Vision 2020”. Seconded by Roger Ricklefs. Ayes 10, Carries.

Staffing:

  1. Motion from Personnel Committee: Approve a new role and job description for Pastor Walter Reemtsma as Senior Outreach Pastor (dedicated to Senior Citizens). Evangelism Committee, Hospitality Committee, and Mission Committee responsible for some of the activities of the Missional Outreach Committee (which no longer exists). The Deacons will work with Pastor Walt as his committee for the Senior Citizens. This would include bus trips, Sunday Senior Fellowship, Family Fun Fest, etc. as well as new groups or activities for younger Senior Citizens. Ayes 10, Carries.
  2. Motion from Personnel Committee: Approve Pastor Loren Shellabarger as Youth and Adult Outreach Pastor (namely dedicated to small groups) along with all pastoral positions that are tied to call.

Informational:

  1. Permission was granted for Algona Garden Club for use of the Fellowship Hall on Monday, April 10, 2017, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

            Sunday, May 14, 2017, is Mother’s Day and Confirmation. Pastor Walt is making bouquets with carnations to give to all Mothers attending the Worship Service that Sunday and also a cake and punch reception for all Confirmands after the Worship Service.

Property – Roger Ricklefs.

Personnel – Justin Ruhnke:

            Employee Recognition for Rachel Jones, Administrative Assistant at the church, is planned for an upcoming Sunday.

Christian Education – Jay Beenken.

Mission – Jan Waltman.

Evangelism – Betsy Petersen (Report in Session packet.):

            Bancroft Bandits Baseball Game attendance being planned for Saturday, June 10, 2017, in Bancroft.

Finance – Sharon Marty.

Mission Technology – Jason Etherington:

            Movie night at the church is being planned for May or June.

Mission Outreach – Pastor Walt Reemtsma (Report in Session packet.) Final Report:

            From March 24 to April 1, 2017, Pastor Walter and Jan Reemtsma lead (39) people to Hershey, PA, Philadelphia, PA, Valley Forge, PA, New York City, upper state New York, and Cleveland, OH, via a motor coach tour. Plans are currently being drafted for a trip to Branson, MO, September 12-15, 2017; and a motor coach trip to Okoboji Summer Theatre is planned for Saturday, August 12, 2017; and possibly a motor coach trip to Winterset, Iowa, sometime in June or July.

            Past and present members will be meeting soon for a final celebration luncheon.

     First Presbyterian Church of Algona held a regular meeting of the Session on March 21, 2017, in the church kitchen. Pastor Loren Shellabarger, moderator, opened the meeting with prayer at 6:30 pm.

     Devotions were read from the Gospel of Matthew 19:16-26.

     Present: Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Jay Beenken, Angelique Berry, Jason Etherington, Betsy Petersen, Pastor Walt Reemtsma, Roger Ricklefs, Justin Ruhnke, Stacy Simpson, and Jan Waltman. Quorum declared.

     Absent: Sharon Marty.

     Jason Etherington moved to adopt the agenda with additions, seconded by Roger Ricklefs. Ayes 10, Carries.

     Jay Beenken moved to approve the minutes from our regular meeting February 17, 2017, seconded by Angelique Berry. Ayes 10, Carries.

Clerk’s Report:

  1. Holy Communion was served to (76) people at First Presbyterian Church, Algona on Ash Wednesday, March 1, (85) people on Sunday, March 5, and on Monday, March 6, (15) people were served Communion at the Algona nursing facilities. Holy Communion was served to Doug and Sharon Marty on Thursday, March 9. (A total number of persons served in March was 163).

  • Deposit was received by Pella Cycling Club for their RAGBRAI housing on Monday, July 24, 2017, at the Algona First Presbyterian Church.

  1. Motion to approve Session Quarterly Report as presented. Ayes 10, Carries.
  2. Angelique Berry moved that First Presbyterian Church, Algona, hold joint Maundy Thursday Services, as we have in the past, with First United Methodist Church, Algona, at First United Methodist Church, Algona, and to prepare the pre-worship meal, seconded by Jay Beenken. Ayes, 10 Carries.
  3. Motion was made by Justin Ruhnke and seconded by Betsy Petersen to disband Missional Outreach Committee. Ayes 10, Carries.

Funding:

  1. Motion to approve paying 75% camp registration for one of our youth to attend Lake Okoboji United Methodist Camp this summer. Ayes 10, Carries.
  2. Roger Ricklefs moved that First Presbyterian Church, Algona discontinue Algona Municipal Utilities service for fax line, seconded by Jason Etherington. Ayes, 10 Carries.
  3. Jason Etherington made the motion to leave the current fee structure in place for nonmembers; however these fees may be waived at the discretion of the Session and to waive building fees for members and friends of Kossuth Area Presbyterian Parish seconded by Jay Beenken. Ayes 10, Carries.

Informational:

  1. Permission to use Sanctuary from Brian Mallia for Eagle Scout ceremony practice on Monday, March 20, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. was granted.
  2. Because this will be no small undertaking and will require a collective effort to be successful, First Presbyterian Church, Algona, has no interest in being a non-profit food vendor for RAGBRAI when riders come to Algona on Monday, July 24, 2017. Instead we will offer our volunteer support to Matt and Angelique Berry who serve on the executive committee. No motion necessary.

  • Beginning in April, Pastor Walter Reemtsma will be recognized as Senior Citizen Pastor rather than Parish Associate Pastor.

  • With the existence or focus of the present Missional Outreach Committee changing due to the fact that Pastor Walt’s ministerial emphasis as Parish Associate Pastor will be changing to an emphasis on senior adults and their needs, a decision was made that Hospitality and Mission Committees will continue to plan the Family Fun Fest and Mission Outreach Committee, as we know it, will cease to exist.

Music Director – Becky Shellabarger

  • Since Jenna Bristow is now leading our youngest children, Becky Shellabarger will begin developing a middle school choir (5th-8th grade).

Cantata/Special Events Music – Pastor Walt Reemtsma

  • Spring Cantata is Sunday, April 30, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. Cookies and bars along with coffee and punch will be served afterward.

  1. Motion was made by Jan Waltman to apply a gift that the church received to the Revitalization Fund, seconded by Angelique Berry. Ayes 10, Carries.
  2. Motion was made by Jay Beenken to approve a bottle filler and filtered drinking water fountain be purchased and installed by Foertsch Heating & Plumbing, seconded by Justin Ruhnke. Ayes 10, Carries.

Mission:

  1. Session approved Mission Committee request to promote a parish-wide Group Mission Trip in the Midwest either June 18-24, 2017, or July 16-22, 2017.
  2. Session approved Mission Committee request for a “fishing derby” for our special One Great Hour of Sharing offering March 1-April 16, 2017. Fish banks are handed out to collect money/coins. After collecting the fish, a weigh-in will determine the winner and each church gets to announce its biggest fish. *Money collected helps people around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, hunger, and those who are poor.

Old Business:

  1. Motion was made by Jason Etherington to approve the designs that were presented for the chancel furniture (communion table, pulpit, baptismal font), seconded by Justin Ruhnke. Ayes 10, Carries.

Agenda Items:

  1. Easter Worship Service Sunday, April 16, 2017, will be at the Algona First Presbyterian Church rather than the Wilcox Performing Arts Center in Algona.
  2. Hospitality Committee will serve refreshments (coffee/juice and pastries) during registration at the Stated Meeting of the Presbytery of North Central Iowa at Burt Presbyterian Church, Tuesday, March 7, 2017, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Pastor Loren, Pastor Walt, and Stacy Simpson are planning to attend. All Ruling Elders are invited.
  3. ALICE Training is scheduled for Wednesday, May 10, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with pizza supper and program to follow from 5:30-8:30 at church.

  • Family Fun Fest is being planned as a fundraiser with a Sudanese theme (music and food). The money will be used to support Pastor Paul Both’s South Sudan Mission Work.

JANUARY 17, 2017

     First Presbyterian Church of Algona, Iowa, held a regular meeting of the Session on January 17, 2017 in the church kitchen. Pastor Loren Shellabarger, moderator, opened the meeting with prayer at 6:30 p.m. Devotions were given by Pastor Walter Reemtsma. (Matthew 10: 5-15, and Hymn “So Send I You”)

     Present: Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Jay Beenken, Angelique Berry, Jason Etherington, Sharon Marty, Betsy Petersen, Pastor Walter Reemtsma, Justin Ruhnke, Stacy Simpson, and Jan Waltman. Quorum declared having 10 members present.

     Absent: Roger Ricklefs.

     Jason moved to approve the minutes from our regular meeting November 15, 2016 and from our Congregational meeting November 20, 2016, seconded by Jay. Ayes 10, Nays 0, Carried.

Ministry with First Presbyterian Church, Lakota, began January 1, 2017. Pastor Walt is now serving the Lakota First Presbyterian Church and every third Sunday of the month either David Skilling or Kent Madison will preach.

Clerk’s Report:

  1. Holy Communion: 238 were served in December; 87 were served in January.
  2. Correspondence: Thank yous were received from Becky and Pastor Loren, and Sherri Beenken.
  3. Approval was given to Algona Noon Kiwanis Club (Pastor Loren) for use of our Fellowship Hall Saturday, January 21, 9:00-11:00 a.m. to prepare for their Radio Auction Event. Ayes 10, Nays 0, Carried.

Agenda Items:

  1. Parish level job descriptions for Pastoral Staff have been requested from the Liaison Committee.
  2. Sexual Harassment Misconduct Training was completed and signed.
  3. Motion made by Sharon to approve vacation request for Pastor Loren, seconded by Jan. Ayes 10, Nays 0, Carried.
  4. Pastor Walt moved to expand worship leaders to include members and friends/attendees of the church in addition to Elders and past Elders, seconded by Jason. Ayes 10, Nays 0, Carried.
  5. Discussion of how to spend an anonymous donation. Some has been spent on monitoring system for Praise Band. Jason moved to approve the purchase of Mac Mini Computer for video, chancel furniture and drinking water fountain, and proceed forward if within budget, seconded by Jan. Ayes 10, Nays 0, Carried.
  6. Ask Congregation’s approval to payoff Revitalization Loan due in June from Manse funds. Finance Committee recommends visiting this again in May. No motion needed.
  7. Jason moved to pay the cost each for (4) youth and (1) chaperone attending a confirmation retreat February 17-19 at Lakeshore Center at Okoboji, seconded by Jay. Ayes 10, Nays 0. Carried
  8. Angelique moved to approve Pastor Loren and Pastor Walt’s “pulpit swap” Sunday, March 5, seconded by Sharon. Ayes 10, Nays 0, Carried.

Other notes:

  1. Session Retreat is Sunday, March 12, at 2:00 p.m.
  2. ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) Training which is an instructor led class that will provide preparation and a plan for our house of worship on how to handle the threat of an aggressive intruder or active shooter. Dates by preference: Wednesday, May 10 at 6:00 p.m. with potluck; Saturday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m.; Sunday, June 11, at 1:00 p.m. Invite anyone from Congregation that would like to attend.
  3. Pastor Loren is still making tentative plans for a communal Easter Worship Service Sunday, April 16, at Wilcox Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Algona High School. He would like to pitch this initiative, yet, to Pastor Glenn Wilson at Burt Presbyterian Church and Ramsey Reformed Church in Titonka.
  4. Session will prepare Christ Wednesday Supper, March 1 (Sharon Marty & co.) and April 19.

  1. Kathi Ricklefs will accompany the Adult Choir one or two Sundays each month so that Becky can direct the group.
  2. Looking for music that will allow the addition of handbells, the Children’s Choir, or Praise Band to participate with the Adult Choir.
  3. The Children’s Choir will continue to sing the second Sunday of each month during the school year.

ALGONA, IOWA

Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Moderator, called the meeting to order with prayer at 11:20 AM.  The purpose of the stated meeting was to elect new church officers, approve the 2017 Pastoral Call, receive the 2017 budget, and to discuss the closing of the Church Revitalization Loan. 

Pastor Loren Shellabarger asked if there was a quorum present.  Quorum per by-laws requires 10% of active members.   61 members were present, quorum declared.

Pastor Loren Shellabarger announced the candidates for the Elder class of 2019.  These candidates are:  Betsy Petersen, Angelique Berry, and Jay Beenken.  Pastor Loren Shellabarger asked for any additional candidates or a motion to approve the three candidates.  Motion made that nominations cease, motion was seconded and passed.  Motion was made to approve Betsy Petersen, Angelique Berry, and Jay Beenken for Class of 2019 Elders.  Motion was seconded.  Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Pastor Loren Shellabarger announced the candidates for the Deacon class of 2019.  These candidates are:  Rachel Jones, Kevin Nelson, and Barb Dodds.  Pastor Loren Shellabarger asked for any additional candidates or a motion to approve the three candidates.  Motion made that nominations cease, motion was seconded and passed.  Motion was made to approve Rachel Jones, Kevin Nelson, and Barb Dodds for Class of 2019 Deacons.  Motion was seconded.  Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Pastor Loren Shellabarger announced the candidate for the 2019 Memorial Committee.  This candidate is Edna Yocum.  Pastor Loren Shellabarger asked for any additional candidates or a motion to approve the candidate.  Motion made that nominations cease, motion was seconded and passed.  Motion was made to approve Edna Yocum for Class of 2019 Memorial Committee.  Motion was seconded.  Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

The Terms of Call for Pastor Loren Shellabarger were presented to the congregation for discussion and vote.  Prior to the discussion and vote, Pastor Loren Shellabarger and Becky Shellabarger excused themselves from the meeting.  After discussion, a motion was made to approve the Terms of Call for Pastor Loren Shellabarger.  Motion was seconded.  Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.  Pastor Loren Shellabarger and Becky Shellabarger rejoined the meeting. 

The 2017 Budget was presented to the congregation for discussion by Grace Freeburg and Sharon Marty.  After discussion, a motion was made to receive the 2017 budget.  Motion was seconded.  Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Pastor Loren Shellabarger presented the status of the Church Revitalization Loan.  All pledges have been received.  The balance on the loan is $8,402.  This loan becomes due in June of 2017.  No action required at this time. 

A Motion was made to adjourn the Congregational Meeting.  Motion was seconded and prevailed.

Pastor Loren Shellabarger closed the Congregational Meeting at 11:47 AM with prayer.

MINUTES of November 15, 2016, REGULAR SESSION MEETING

Algona First Presbyterian Church – 6:30 P.M.

     Pastor Loren Shellabarger opened the Session meeting with prayer and devotions.

     MEMBERS PRESENT:  Pastor Loren Shellabarger

     Having eight Ruling Elders present, a quorum was declared.  A motion was made by Jan Waltman and seconded to approve the agenda as amended.  Motion prevailed.  A motion was made by Jason Etherington and was seconded to approve the Minutes of the October 25, 2016 Regular Session Meeting as corrected to reflect that Pastor Walter Reemtsma opened the Session meeting with prayer and devotions. Motion prevailed.

ASSISTANT PASTOR WALTER’S REPORT:

CLERK’S REPORT:

     Communion was served to 77 people on Sunday, November 6, 2016.   17 people were served Communion at the Algona care facilities and shut-ins on November 7, 2016.  A total of 94 people were served communion in October.

     A motion was made by Pastor Walter to approve Shirley Bowman’s (Georgia Christenson’s daughter) request to use the Fellowship Hall and Kitchen on Saturday, April 8, 2017, from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm for an open house 80th birthday celebration for Georgia that will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 pm.  Motion was seconded and prevailed.

     A motion was made by Pastor Walter to approve the request by Faye Schluter, Extension Education Director, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Kossuth County, to use the Fireside Room, Kitchen and Fellowship Hall from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, December 8, 2016 and Thursday, December 15, 2016, for a Retirement Seminar.  Motion was seconded and prevailed.

Items Acted on and/or Discussed by the Session – November 15, 2016.

  • Jerry Yocum made a motion to approve the plan to extend Parish support to the Lakota Presbyterian Church. Motion was seconded and prevailed.  (Questions may be directed to Pastor Loren or Pastor Walter.)
  • Discussed plans for the joint Christmas morning worship service involving the Algona Presbyterian Church and the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church.
  • Discussion was held regarding the church’s annual Fat Tuesday Waffle Feed on February 28, 2017. After the discussion, it was determined that everything was in order and no further action was necessary.
  • A motion was made by Jan Waltman to hold ALICE training at the church with a time to be determined. Motion was seconded and prevailed.
  • Considering that many poinsettias are left at the church following Advent, discussion was held about possible changes to the past plan of purchasing poinsettias in memory of loved ones. A motion was made by Jason Etherington to purchase a sufficient amount of poinsettias to properly decorate the church for the Advent season, with the congregation being asked to donate money for said purchase in memory of their loved ones.  Any monies collected above the purchase price will be placed in the Memorial Fund in the loved ones memory.  Motion seconded and prevailed.
  • Pastor Loren made the request that the Session approve the resolution to comply with IRS regulations. Jason Etherington made a motion to approve Pastor Loren’s request.  Motion was seconded and prevailed.

     Pastor Loren and Pastor Walt requested that they do a pulpit swap on Sunday, November 13, 2016.  A motion was made by Justin Ruhnke to approve the request for pulpit swap on November 13, 2016.  Motion was seconded and approved unanimously. 

     A motion was made by David Skilling to approve the Parish Churches holding one Christmas Service on Sunday, December 25, 2016, at the Algona First Presbyterian Church beginning at either 10:00 am or 10:15 am.  Motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

  1. Jerry Yocum made the motion to approve the request from Becky Shellabarger to use the Sanctuary and Fireside Room for a piano recital Saturday, December 17, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Sharon Marty seconded. Motion carries.
  2. A refund check was received from the Presbytery of North Central Iowa. Motion made by Jason Etherington and seconded by Jerry Yocum to pass on that gift and return it to Presbytery of North Central Iowa for the Educational Debt Assistance Program. Motion carries.
  3. A motion was made by Jerry Yocum and seconded by Jason Etherington to change Wednesday Worship to “Christ Wednesday”. Motion carries.
  4. Jerry Yocum made a motion and Stacy Simpson seconded to approve a funding request again this year to FCAtalyst, which is a high school Bible study group that meets weekly. Funding to come from Youth Fund this year and Evangelism Budget for 2017. Motion carries.
  5. Motion was made by Jan Waltman and seconded by Jason Etherington to cover a microphone requested by Mission Technology Committee and funding to come from Hospitality Committee (kitchen) budget to help with costs. Motion carries 8-1.

  • Two tickets were received as a thank you from the Kossuth County Concert Association for allowing them to use our facility during their membership drive. It was decided to hold a drawing for them beginning Wednesday, September 21, 2016.
  • First Presbyterian Church, Irvington, is planning to have a float with the theme “Faith MOVES Mountains” in the annual Algona Band Day Festival Parade Saturday, October 1, 2016, and invites all parish churches to ride/walk with them wearing their “Faith MOVES Mountains” T-shirts.
  • First Presbyterian Church, Irvington is planning to host a Halloween Party on Sunday, October 30, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Trunk or treating is open to all who would like to participate.
  • Discussion on a joint Parish Worship Service on Christmas Day (which falls on Sunday this year) was tabled.

     After discussion, Jan Waltman made a motion to refer Good Samaritan Nursing Home’s request for volunteers to assist with the serving of refreshments to residents of the facility to the Evangelism Committee.  Motion was seconded.  Motion carried.

     Dave Skilling made a motion to purchase a Go Pro Hero 4 Black Camera using money from the Youth Fund.  Motion was seconded.  Prior to vote, Jan Waltman made a motion to amend to add additional electronic devices to be purchased along with the camera.  Motion to amend was seconded. A vote was taken on the motion to Amend by written ballot.  Motion passed.

     The Session then voted on the amended motion to purchase the Go Pro Hero 4 Black Camera plus additional electronic equipment.  Motion failed. 

    After discussion, Sharon made a motion to purchase a Go Pro Hero 4 Black Camera using Youth Funds.  Motion carried.  

     After discussion, Sharon made a motion to purchase Pro Presentator 6 Software.  Motion carried.

of Regular Session Meeting June 21, 2016

     Present: Sherri Beenken, Jason Etherington, Sharon Marty, Roger Ricklefs, Justin Ruhnke, Pastor Loren Shellabarger, Stacy Simpson, Jan Waltman, and Jerry Yocum.

     Absent: David Skilling, Pastor Walter Reemtsma

     Pastor Loren Shellabarger declared a quorum and opened meeting with prayer. Meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. Devotions were read from Galatians 3: Verses 23-29.

     Jason Etherington made a motion to approve the meeting agenda as presented. Sherri Beenken seconded. Motion carries.

     Motion was made by Jason Etherington to approve the Meeting Minutes of May 17, 2016, as presented. Sherri Beenken seconded. Motion carries.

     Sharon Marty reviewed the Treasurer’s Report.

     Pastor Loren Shellabarger reviewed Pastor’s Report.

     Pastor Walter Reemtsma’s Report was in the Session packet for review.

Clerk of Session Report:

     Communion was served to (64) people Sunday, June 5, 2016. Communion was served to (20) shut-ins Monday, June 6, 2016.

     Correspondence received from Tyler Garman and Algona Public Library. Tyler thanked the congregation for the graduation gifts. Algona Public Library thanked the congregation for supporting the summer reading program with our monetary donation.

Action Items:

     Jerry Yocum made the motion to approve use of church for the wedding ceremony for Ben Schultze and Tana McCurry October 8, 2016 and for wedding prep/rehearsal October 7, 2016. Sharon Marty seconded. Motion carries.

     Discuss staffing the nursery during worship. After consulting with Hospitality Committee, Jan Waltman will draft a proposal for Session at next regular meeting.

     Motion made by Jerry Yocum to grant Donna Steven permission to lead Holy Communion Sunday, July 3, 2016. Seconded by Sharon Marty. Motion carries.

     Session approved joining the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce as of July 1, 2016. (Hospitality)

     Session approved $500 sponsorship to South Sudan Mission. Motion was made by Sharon Marty and seconded by Justin Ruhnke for $250 from local Mission budget and $250 from Third Act Rise Up budget for a total of $500.  Motion carries.

Clerk of Session Report: Holy Communion served to 70 people on Sunday, March 6, 2016.

Linda Redemske, BRCC committee member, presented to Session BRCC committee ideas for arranging church memorial items in the empty space in the alcove in the northeast corner of Narthex. Motion made to hang cross by design of the committee (either angle the cross or hang cross off center of wall so it appears the cross is out the side and out of top). Committee will report to Session at next meeting.  Motion carried.

Motion made to offer a camp scholarship for Jesse Sassman to attend United Methodist Camp at Lake Okoboji this summer. Usually 75% of camp fees are paid by church.  Motion carried.

Motion made to approve Kossuth Community Concert Association use of our building for their membership drives: March 30, April 13, and April 27 Fireside Room, and March 20 & 21 7-8 p.m. in Kitchen and Fellowship Hall. Motion carried.

Pastor Loren advised the Session that members of the Cherish House in Milford, Iowa, involved with the “Baby Bottle Drive”, will be at our church on Sunday, September, 11, 2016 to drop off the baby bottles and provide a brief presentation to the congregation.  They will return on Sunday, October 9, 2016 to pick up the baby bottles.

CLERK’S REPORT:

Communion was served to 76 people on Sunday, February 7, 2016.  There was no communion to shuts-ins because of the weather.

  • A request was made by Chelsea Southwick and Nick Bleuer to use the church June 3 and 4, 2016 for a wedding. Discussion followed and no action was taken at this time. 
  • Pastor Paul Both, Missionary to South Sudan and Ethiopia, made a request to take part in a service at our church. The Session directed Pastor Loren to contact Pastor Paul Both and make arrangements for him to participate in a worship service at the church.

  • Evangelism – Stacy Simpson – reported on her committee meeting that was held Feb. 11, 2016.
  • Property – Roger Ricklefs – the Session recognized Roger for all of the work and repairs he does in and around the church. Roger advised that new flags have been ordered to replace the current outside flags. 
  • Personnel – Sharon Marty – reported that all employee evaluations had been completed.
  • Missional Outreach – Pastor Walter – discussed volunteering at Bertha Godfrey School. Also discussed working with the Mission Committee to provide needed items of clothing for student emergencies. This committee also discussed Family Fun Fest and set the date for August 14, 2016. 
  • Liaison – Justin Ruhnke – the committee is working on setting a date to meet in March with the Irvington and Lone Rock Churches.
  • Co-Directors of Music – Pastor Walter and Becky Shellabarger – report on file in the secretary’s office for congregational review.
  • Third Act – Rise Up – Sherri Beenken – discussion was held regarding this committee working with the Missional Outreach Committee to provide volunteers at Bertha Godfrey School.

  • Motion made and seconded to allow for meetings immediately following worship for the sole purpose of receiving new members with a minimum of two ruling Elders and either Rev. Loren and/or Pastor Walt to serve as moderator as a quorum. The only business allowed is to receive new members and new members will still be invited forward at a future worship service to be received by the congregation. Motion carried.
  • We decided to modify our vision statement based on both realities and desire from “Striving to be God’s Church for all People” to “Striving to be God’s People.”
  • Actions taken to remove members that have moved away.

Having ten Ruling Elders present, a quorum was declared. A motion was made by Victoria and seconded to approve the agenda as modified. Motion prevailed. A motion was made by Don Bristow and was seconded to approve the Minutes of the November 17, 2015 Regular Session Meeting and the Minutes of the December 13, 2015 Congregational Meeting. Communion was served to 54 people on Wednesday, November 18, 2015. Communion was served to 81 people on Sunday, December 6, 2015. Communion was served to 19 people at Algona nursing homes and shut-ins on Monday December 7, 2015. Total served was 154.

 Items Acted on and/or Discussed by the Session – December 15, 2015

  • Each year it is the Session’s duty to set the housing allowance and the appurtenances as part of Pastor Loren’s terms of call. Pastor Loren Shellabarger will annually provide the church treasurer with the amounts spent on the housing allowance by January 31. The amount of appurtenances must be detailed as required by the Internal Revenue Code. The appurtenances include the following categories related to housing expenses: down payment, mortgage payments, property taxes, property insurance, utilities, furnishing and appliances, repairs and improvements, maintenance and miscellaneous. Jerry Yocum made a motion, effective December 31, 2015, for the designated housing allowance for Pastor Loren Shellabarger for the year of 2016 and all years thereafter unless changed by the Pastor and approved by the Session. Motion was seconded and motion prevailed. (Finance)
  • Pastor Walter made a motion to set the Congregational year-end meeting on January 17, 2016, immediately following the scheduled worship service. The reports are to be filed with the church secretary by January 10, 2016. Motion was seconded and motion prevailed. (Clerk of Session)
  • Following an informed discussion, Sherri Beenken made a motion to contribute monies from the Youth Fund to support students at Algona High School that are participating in a weekly Bible study. Motion was seconded and prevailed. (Mission/Evangelism)
  • Victoria Koestler made a motion to allow the following organizations/people to use the church facilities on the noted dates and times. Motion was seconded and motion prevailed. (Property/Hospitality)
    • Pastor Walt and Jan Reemtsma with the Garden Club of Algona request use of the Algona Presbyterian Church Kitchen and Fellowship Hall on Monday, April 11, 2016, 5:30 pm – 10 pm.
    • First Presbyterian Church of Algona’s Presbyterian Women request the use of the Algona Presbyterian Church’s Kitchen and Fellowship Hall on Thursday, March 3, 2016, 2:00 pm through 3:00 pm on Friday, March 4, 2016, for set-up and use for World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 4, 2016. They also request the use of the Algona Presbyterian Church’s Sanctuary on Friday, March 4, 2016 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm for World Day of Prayer. Contact person is Linda Redemske, 295-7565.
  • The Session discussed the gift of a Stained Glass Window that was part of the original First Presbyterian Church of Algona. (Property)

  • Sharon Marty made a motion to terminate the present Covenant Agreement between the First Presbyterian Church Algona, Iowa and Walter Reemtsma CRE and enter into a new Covenant Agreement as set out in the Terms of Call worksheet 2015, attached hereto and made part of the record herein, beginning September 1, 2015 and signed by the Clerks of Session for the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church, the Algona Presbyterian Church, the Irvington Presbyterian Church, and Walter Reemtsma CRE.   The motion was seconded and the motion prevailed. (Liaison Committee)
  • Don Bristow made a motion to change the present Terms of Call for Loren Shellabarger, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church Algona, Iowa as set out in the Terms of Call worksheet 2015, attached hereto and made part of the record herein, to show a 5 per cent increase in the overall Terms of Call to reflect time spent in ministry to the Lone Rock church and to reflect a corresponding decrease in the percentage allotted to the Algona church for Pastor Loren’s time spent in ministry to the Lone Rock church. The motion was seconded and the motion prevailed. (Liaison Committee)
  • Jerry Yocum made a motion to establish Co-directors to lead the Church’s Music program, with the positions to be filled by Pastor Walter Reemtsma and Becky Shellabarger and to have the salary split evenly between the co-directors.   • David Skilling made a motion to provide college care packages four times during the school year to college students from our congregation through a business entity that provides this service. The motion was seconded. After a lengthy discussion the motion failed. (Christian Ed Committee)
  • Pastor Loren discussed the new Bible study he would be leading beginning this fall. During the discussion it was decided that the Bible study group/participants would undertake the responsibility of seeing that care packages are sent to college students from our congregation during the school year.
  • Jerry Yocum presented the Ministry and Mission grant application for 2016 as prepared by the Mission Committee. After review and discussion the Session approved the proposal and was signed and dated by the Clerk of Session. (Mission Committee)
  • Sharon Marty made a motion to reconstruct and relocate the present church sign to provide better visibility from Main Street and State Street. The motion was seconded and the motion prevailed. (Property Committee)
  • The Session approved the personnel committee’s recommendation to hire Grace Freeburg as the new church treasurer. Grace has been working with current treasurer, Jim Gage, since August 1, 2015 and will continue working with Jim through September 30, which is Jim’s final day as church treasurer. Therefore, Grace’s start day was August 1, 2015 and her salary will be paid reflecting that start date. (Personnel Committee)
  • Victoria Koestler made a motion to purchase the online version of PowerChurch to be used for membership, attendance, contributions, and accounting. The motion was seconded and the motion prevailed. (Mission Technology Committee)
  • Don Bristow made a motion to accept a handmade full play kitchen set, from Marlene Eastman, to be used in the nursery. Motion was seconded and motion prevailed.
  • Walter Reemtsma made a motion to allow the Prosper Team to use the church on Sunday evenings from October 4 through November 15, 2015 from the hours of 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Motion was seconded and motion prevailed.
  • Walter Reemtsma made a motion to accept the offer of screen paintings of the Three Wise Men, from the Keiths, to be used during the Christmas season. Motion was seconded and motion prevailed.
  • The Session discussed a reception for outgoing treasurer Jim Gage and his wife, Deb. Also discussed a reception for Jerry Yocum for his years of service in the Adult Sunday School program. It was decided that a reception for the Gages and the Yocums would be held during the month of October after a regular Sunday morning church service. (Hospitality Committee)
  • The Session approved a proposal by the personnel committee to increase Rachel Jones’s hours of work from 22 hours to 26 hours per week. (Personnel Committee)
  • Walter Reemtsma made a motion to have the church sponsor a seat in the new Wilcox Performing Art’s Center. Motion was seconded. After much discussion the motion prevailed 6-4. (Evangelism Committee)

Pastor Loren announced that funds had been donated to upgrade and repair the church sign on the southeast corner of the church property and to construct a new sign on the northeast corner of the church property.

Sharon Marty made a motion to authorize the Property Committee to take the necessary steps to begin the process of updating and repairing the existing sign and the construction of a new sign. The motion was seconded and the motion prevailed.

Sharon Marty reported on the committee’s search for a new treasurer. Committee is pleased with the progress of the search and will keep the Session updated.

  • David Skilling made a motion that the Liaison Committee, including Pastor Loren and Pastor Walter, from the First Presbyterian Church of Algona investigate changing our Yoked relationship to include the Presbyterian churches of Algona, Irvington, and Lone Rock and to arrange for a meeting with representatives from the Lone Rock Church Session to develop details of this relationship and report back to the Session of the Algona Presbyterian Church on August 18, 2015, the next regular scheduled Session Meeting. Motion seconded and prevailed.
